Hoodie sizes above XL follow the brand, not a national standard. Men’s and unisex 3XL fits about a 54 to 56 inch chest at Westport and a 56 inch chest at Carhartt; women’s 3X fits a 51.5 to 54 inch bust at Dia & Co. Measure your chest, then compare inches, never letters.
This section breaks hoodies down by size. Start with the question you have, or read on for how to measure.
How do hoodie sizes from 2XL up compare in inches?
These are body measurements from each brand’s own chart: the chest or bust around you, not across the hoodie. Westport and Carhartt size men’s and unisex tops; Dia & Co and Nike size women’s plus tops.
| Size | Westport big (chest) | Carhartt (chest) | Women’s size | Dia & Co (bust) | Nike (bust) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2XL | 50 to 52 in (2XB) | 52 in | 1X | 44 to 45.5 in | 45 to 49 in |
| 3XL | 54 to 56 in (3XB) | 56 in | 2X | 47 to 49 in | 49 to 53 in |
| 4XL | 58 to 60 in (4XB) | 60 in | 3X | 51.5 to 54 in | 53 to 57 in |
| 5XL | 62 to 64 in (5XB) | 64 in | 4X | 56.5 to 59 in | not on chart |
| 6XL | 66 to 68 in (6XB) | 68 in | 5X | 61.5 to 64 in | not on chart |
Two things stand out. First, the brands do not agree: Nike’s 2X starts where Dia & Co’s 2X ends. Second, a men’s size and a women’s size on the same row are not equivalents; they are only listed side by side to save space. The 3X vs 3XL page compares the two systems properly.

How do you measure for a hoodie?
Use a soft tape and keep it level, snug but not tight.
- Chest or bust: around the fullest part. Westport measures over a shirt, with the tape up under the arms and across the shoulder blades.
- Sleeve: Westport measures from the middle of the back, just below the neck, across the shoulder and bent elbow to the wrist.
- Length: stand straight and note where you want the hem to land, at the hip or lower.
Write the numbers down. They are the same next season.
Measure a hoodie you already own
Some sellers, especially small print shops, list garment measurements instead of body sizes. Then the hoodie in your closet is the better ruler. Lay it flat and smooth, measure straight across the chest from one armpit seam to the other and double the number, then measure from the top of the shoulder by the hood down to the hem. Compare both with the listing. If your favorite hoodie measures 30 inches across, it is 60 inches around, and a hoodie listed at 26 inches across will feel much closer.

Big, tall and plus: which label do you need?
Kiwi Sizing, which builds size charts for clothing stores, describes big sizes as made for a larger neck, shoulders, chest, waist and hips, and tall sizes as having more length in the torso, arms and legs. Labels such as 2XL to 5XL add width; LT, XLT and 2XLT up add length.
Pick your size path
- Hoodie tight across the chest: go up in big or plus sizes. See 3XL, 4XL or 5XL and up.
- Chest fits, sleeves and hem too short: go tall. See tall hoodies, LT to 5XT.
- Shopping women’s 1X to 5X: see women’s plus hoodies and how 3X compares with 3XL.
- Not sure what 1X or XLT means at all: our sister site explains what size 1X is and what XLT means.
What if you fall between sizes?
Carhartt’s chart says to order the next size up when your chest falls between sizes. Nike puts it as a choice: the smaller size for a closer fit, the larger one for a looser fit, and the bust measurement decides when bust and waist disagree. For a hoodie, rib cuffs and a rib hem with some stretch give more room to work with than a woven jacket would. A relaxed or oversized cut adds room on purpose; the oversized hoodies page explains when that matters. For dress and tunic lengths, the hip often decides the size; see hoodie dresses.

Women’s numeric and W sizes
Women’s plus sizes are also written as numbers. Target’s Universal Thread plus chart maps them like this: 16W is 1X, 20W is 2X, 24W is 3X and 28W is 4X, with the odd sizes in between (14W, 18W, 22W, 26W). Dia & Co pairs each letter with two numbers, US 22/24 for 3X. If you know your numeric size, the letter follows.
Keep a size note on your phone
Once you have measured, write a short note with your chest or bust, sleeve, preferred hoodie length, and the brands and sizes that fit you. Next season, or when buying online from a new seller, compare the chart with that note instead of measuring again.
Why do charts disagree so much?
The FTC’s textile labeling rules cover fiber content, country of origin and who made or sold the garment, not what a size means, so each brand sets its own steps. That is why Nike’s 2X starts at the bust where Dia & Co’s 2X ends, and why the 4XL page quotes two charts for one size. The habit that solves it is simple: keep your numbers, check each chart, and buy by inches.
Frequently asked questions
Should I measure my body or a hoodie I already own?
Use whichever the seller's chart lists. Most brand charts, including Westport, Carhartt, Dia & Co and Nike, list body measurements. When a listing gives garment measurements instead, lay a hoodie that fits you flat and compare it.
Are hoodie sizes the same at every brand?
No. The same label can mean a different chest. Carhartt lists its 4XL for a 60 inch chest, while Westport lists 4XB for 58 to 60 inches, and Nike's women's 2X runs from a 49 to a 53 inch bust where Dia & Co's 2X is 47 to 49.
What do I do if I am between two sizes?
Carhartt tells shoppers to order the next size up when the chest falls between sizes. Nike suggests the smaller size for a closer fit or the larger one for a looser fit. A hoodie with stretch rib cuffs and hem is the more forgiving choice.
Do tall sizes have a bigger chest?
No. On Westport's chart a 3XT and a 3XB share the same 54 to 56 inch chest; the tall size adds sleeve length, 38/39 inches against 34/35.
