Plus-Size Hoodie and Sweatshirt Dresses: Lengths and Fits
Plus-size hoodie dresses, sweatshirt dresses and tunic hoodies compared: how long each runs, how to size by hip as well as bust, and what to wear with them.

A hoodie dress is a hoodie long enough to wear as a dress, usually mid-thigh to knee; a sweatshirt dress is the same without the hood, and a tunic hoodie stops just past the hip. In plus sizes, size these by your hip as well as your bust, and check the body length in inches.
Longer hoodies are the comfortable end of a wardrobe, and they are made in plus sizes in all three lengths. This page is part of the women’s plus hoodies section.
Where should the hem land?
| Style | Typical hem | Worn with | Neckline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tunic hoodie | Below the hip, upper thigh | Leggings, slim jeans, joggers | Hood |
| Hoodie dress | Mid-thigh to knee | Leggings, tights, bike shorts | Hood |
| Sweatshirt dress | Mid-thigh to knee | Tights, boots, sneakers | Crew or mock neck |
Brands use these names loosely, so a “tunic” from one seller can be a “mini dress” from another. The body length in inches is what tells you which one it is.
How to measure for length
Stand straight and measure from the top of your shoulder, next to the neck, down to the point where you want the hem. That number is the body length you are looking for. If you are tall, add the difference to what the listing shows for your size; the tall hoodies page explains how tall sizes add length.

Size by bust and hip
A top only has to fit the bust and fall past the hip. A dress has to pass over the hip and sit there without pulling. That is why the hip number matters more here than on a regular hoodie. Dia & Co’s chart lists both:
| Dia & Co size | Bust | Hip |
|---|---|---|
| 1X (US 14/16) | 44 to 45.5 in | 46 to 47.5 in |
| 2X (US 18/20) | 47 to 49 in | 49 to 51 in |
| 3X (US 22/24) | 51.5 to 54 in | 53.5 to 56 in |
| 4X (US 26/28) | 56.5 to 59 in | 58.5 to 61 in |
| 5X (US 30/32) | 61.5 to 64 in | 63.5 to 66 in |
Nike’s plus chart lists hip too, 50 to 54 inches at 2X. When your bust points to one size and your hip to the next, take the larger one for a dress. A split side seam or a curved hem gives extra room to move.

What to wear with a long hoodie
- Leggings or slim pants under a tunic hoodie, as in this photo: warm, easy and right for a winter walk.
- Tights and ankle boots under a hoodie dress for a dressed-up version.
- Bike shorts under a shorter hoodie dress in warm weather.
- A belt at the waist, if you like the shape, or none at all.
Fabric and care for longer hoodies
Cotton-rich fleece can shrink in the dryer, and on a dress length even a small loss shows at the hem. The FTC’s Care Labeling Rule requires makers to attach care instructions and to warn against care that would harm the garment, so the label is the first thing to read. The fabric guide explains why tumbling shrinks cotton and how to dry a hoodie so it keeps its length.
For warmth, look at the fabric weight in the listing. A sherpa-lined hoodie dress is the warmest, though it adds thickness; the sherpa page covers linings.
Hoodie dress or oversized hoodie?
A long oversized hoodie can work as a short hoodie dress if the length is right, and the cut gives room at the hip. A hoodie dress is cut to be a dress, with the length planned. If you want the dress look every time, buy the dress; if you want a hoodie that sometimes doubles as one, an oversized cut in your size is the flexible choice.

Hood, crew or mock neck?
The neckline changes the look more than the length does.
- Hood: the most casual and the warmest, with a pocket on most styles.
- Crew neck: the sweatshirt-dress classic; it takes a necklace or a collared shirt underneath.
- Mock neck: a short stand-up collar that looks dressier with boots.
- Cowl or wide neck: a soft drape that can sit off one shoulder.
Layering a long hoodie
A hoodie dress or tunic works as the middle layer in cold weather: a long-sleeve tee or thermal underneath, leggings or tights, and an open coat or a long cardigan over it. Because the hoodie is long, a shorter jacket over it shows the hem, which is part of the look. In mild weather it stands on its own with sneakers.
Tunic hoodies for everyday wear
A tunic hoodie is the most practical of the three lengths. It covers the hip over leggings, works with slim jeans, and goes under a coat without bunching. If you want a dress look on some days and a long top on others, a tunic length is the one that does both.
Before you order
- Measure bust, hip and the body length you want.
- Size by the larger of bust and hip on the brand’s chart.
- Read the body length in inches, not the style name.
- Check the fiber line and the care label, and keep cotton-rich styles out of long hot dryer cycles.
- Compare with zip-up hoodies if you want a long layer you can wear open.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a hoodie dress?
Most fall between mid-thigh and the knee, but brands differ. Measure from the top of your shoulder down to where you want the hem, and compare that with the body length in the listing.
What do you wear with a hoodie dress?
Leggings or tights with ankle boots or sneakers are the classic pairing. In warm weather, bike shorts underneath work for a shorter dress.
Should I size a hoodie dress by bust or hip?
By whichever is larger on the brand's chart. A dress has to pass over the hip, so in plus sizes the hip measurement often decides. Dia & Co's 3X, for example, fits a 51.5 to 54 inch bust and a 53.5 to 56 inch hip.
Is a tunic hoodie the same as a hoodie dress?
No. A tunic hoodie is a long top that covers the hip and is worn over pants or leggings; a hoodie dress is long enough to wear as a dress.
