4XL Hoodies: Pullovers and Zip-Ups for a 58 to 60 Inch Chest

A 4XL hoodie fits about a 58 to 60 inch chest: Westport Big & Tall lists 4XB at 58 to 60 inches and Carhartt’s chart puts 4XL at 60. A 4XT keeps that chest and adds sleeve length. A women’s 4X is its own size, 56.5 to 59 inches of bust at Dia & Co; compare inches.

At 4XL, size lists start to thin out: Carhartt’s K121, for example, stops at 4XL in regular sizes and at 3XL in tall. Here is what a 4XL fits at each brand and which hoodies you can still buy in it. The size guide has the full ladder from 2XL up.

What does a 4XL fit?

The two women’s charts differ by more than an inch at the same label, the two men’s charts by about an inch. All five are body measurements.

Which hoodies come in 4XL?

From the makers’ own size lists:

• Carhartt K121 Loose Fit Midweight Sweatshirt. Regular sizes run up to 4XL. Tall sizes stop at 3XL, so a 4XLT needs another brand.
• Champion Powerblend Hoodie, Big & Tall. The big and tall listing includes 4XL and 4XB.
• Gildan Heavy Blend Hooded Sweatshirt (18500). Listed up to 5XL. Because it is a common blank for printed hoodies, a design from a small print shop may come in 4XL if the shop stocks that size.

A brand’s size list on its own website is the reliable answer. A marketplace listing that says “fits up to 4XL” without a chart is not a measurement.

Pullover, zip-up or quarter zip?

The opening changes how a hoodie goes on and off. A full zip goes on like a jacket and can be worn open. A quarter zip opens the neck without the full-length zipper. A pullover has the cleanest front and the largest pocket. If you wear a hoodie over a collared shirt or a thick layer, the full zip is the easiest of the three.

Reading a seller’s garment chart

Many small sellers list garment measurements instead of a body chart: chest width laid flat, body length and sleeve. To use one, measure a hoodie you already like the same way.

A worked example: your favorite hoodie measures 29 inches across the chest laid flat, so it is 58 inches around. A listing that gives a 4XL chest width of 30 inches (60 around) will feel a little roomier; one that gives 27 inches (54 around) will feel noticeably closer. Body length works the same way, measured from the top of the shoulder to the hem.

Matching sets

Some hoodie lines have matching sweatpants, which makes a full set in one size easy. Gildan, for example, lists matching G18100, G18200, G18300 and G18250 sweatpants for its 18500 hoodie, and both are common blanks for printed designs.

Women’s 4X or unisex 4XL?

If you wear a women’s 4X, both systems are open to you. Dia & Co’s 4X fits a 56.5 to 59 inch bust; Westport’s 4XB fits a 58 to 60 inch chest. A women’s plus hoodie follows a chart with bust and hip; a unisex 4XL follows a chest-only chart and may run longer in the body and sleeve. Choose the women’s cut if you want the chart to account for your hip, and the unisex one if you like a longer, straighter hoodie. Either way, compare the inches.

When to go up to 5XL or across to tall

• 4XL is tight at the chest or the stomach: compare the 5XL and up page. Westport’s 5XB covers a 62 to 64 inch chest.
• Chest fits but sleeves and hem are short: look for 4XT or 4XLT; the tall hoodies page lists tall sleeve lengths.
• You want a roomier look in your usual size: an oversized or drop-shoulder cut adds room without changing the label. The oversized hoodies page explains the difference.

Where to start if 4XL is new to you

If you have been wearing a 3XL that feels close, measure before you jump a size. A 3XL on Westport’s chart tops out at a 56 inch chest and a 4XL starts at 58, so a 57 inch chest sits right in the gap; a relaxed or loose-fit 3XL, or a 4XL zip-up, are both reasonable choices there.

A 4XL buying checklist

1. Measure your chest at its fullest point with a level tape.
2. Match it to the chart on the listing, not to the label you wore last time.
3. If the seller only gives garment measurements, lay a hoodie that fits flat, measure across the chest, double it and compare.
