5XL, 6XL and Bigger Hoodies: What Fits and Where to Find Them

A 5XL hoodie fits about a 62 to 64 inch chest at Westport Big & Tall and a 64 inch chest on Carhartt’s chart; 6XL fits about 66 to 68 inches. Many hoodie lines stop at 5XL, and the charts quoted here end at 6XL, so for bigger sizes ask the seller for chest and length in inches.

What do 5XL and 6XL fit?

Carhartt’s body chart runs to 6XL, but its K121 hoodie is only made up to 4XL, so a chart size is not a promise that a given style is made in it.

How to shop 7XL and up

None of the charts quoted here go past 6XL, so above that point the label tells you little on its own. A few habits help:

• Ask for inches. Before ordering, ask the seller for the chest width laid flat and the body length. Double the width for the chest around.
• Measure your best-fitting top. Lay it flat and note the same two numbers, then compare.
• Prefer zip-ups for a first order. A zip-up worn open still works if the chest runs close.
• Check the hem and cuffs. Rib with spandex has some give; a plain hem has none.

Big, tall or both in 5XL and up

Westport’s chart keeps the chest the same between big and tall at each step: a 5XT and a 5XB both fit a 62 to 64 inch chest. The tall version adds sleeve, 38/39 inches against 35/36. Choosing fabric in the biggest sizes

The fabric weight on the label tells you how thick the fleece is. Gildan lists its 18500 at 8.0 oz/yd², and the fabric guide shows how to convert ounces to grams per square meter and what fleece, cotton and sherpa linings change. If you run warm, a lighter midweight hoodie may suit you better than a heavyweight one. If you run cold, a sherpa or fleece-lined hoodie is the warmest option.

Asking a seller for measurements

A short message gets better answers than “will this fit me”. Something like this works:

Hi, could you tell me the chest width laid flat, the body length from the shoulder, and the sleeve length for the 6XL? Thank you.

Then compare the answer with a hoodie you own, measured the same way. If the seller cannot give numbers, treat the size as a guess and check the return policy before you order.

Returns and exchanges

At the top of the size range, an exchange can take longer because fewer pieces are made in each size. Before you buy, check how long the return window is, who pays return shipping, and whether the seller offers an exchange or only a refund. Keep tags on until you have tried the hoodie over the layers you plan to wear under it.

Wearing a hoodie in the biggest sizes

A hoodie in 5XL or 6XL works with the same styling as any size: over a long-sleeve tee in cool weather, under an open jacket in the cold, with joggers or jeans. A zip-up is the easiest to layer, and a pullover gives the cleanest front for a printed design. Choose a weight to match how warm you run, and keep a lighter hoodie for indoor wear.

If a style you like stops at 5XL, look at whether the same maker sells a zip-up or a tall version in your size; a 5XT on Westport’s chart has the same chest as a 5XB with a longer sleeve.

2. Confirm the style is made in your size on the maker’s own page.
3. Get the inches for anything labeled 7XL or bigger.
4. Read the care label, and keep cotton-rich hoodies out of long hot dryer cycles.
